What we can engrave: a materials guide
Wood, metal, glass, acrylic, leather, and more. Here is how each material takes an engrave and what it is good for.
One of the most common questions we get is simply: can you engrave this? The answer is usually yes, but each material behaves differently under the laser, and knowing how helps you pick the right piece for the job. Here is a rundown of what we work with most.
Wood
Warm, natural, and forgiving. Wood engraves with a rich burned tone that stands out against the grain. It is great for cutting boards, plaques, signs, and gifts that should feel personal and handmade.
Stainless steel and coated metal
Powder-coated and anodized metals engrave to a crisp, high-contrast mark, where the laser reveals the layer underneath. This is exactly what makes engraved tumblers and drinkware look so clean. Bare metal can be marked too.
The real question is rarely can you engrave this. It is which material will make your piece look its best.
Glass and drinkware
Glass engraves to a frosted, etched finish that is elegant and permanent. It is ideal for barware, awards, and anything that should feel a little upscale.
Acrylic
Sharp and versatile. Acrylic engraves cleanly and can be cut to shape, and edge-lit acrylic can even glow. It is a great fit for signage, displays, and modern pieces.
Leather
Leather engraves to a clean, darkened impression with a great texture. It is perfect for patches, tags, journals, and goods that should feel premium in the hand.
And the stuff you would not expect
Slate, cork, coated ceramics, and more. If you are not sure whether something can be engraved, just ask. The list is a lot longer than most people think.
